Public Notice: POUND NET NOTICES

REGULATION 4 VAC 20-25-10 ET SEQ., PERTAINING TO POUND NET SITING PUBLIC INTEREST REVIEW" requires that there be an opportunity for public comment on new pound net locations that are requested for licensing by commercial fishermen.  The following notices are posted by date; the comment period for each specific notice ends approximately 30 days from the date posted on this web site.   Please check with The Fisheries Division at (757) 247-2248 to determine when a specific comment period ends.  Send comments/inquiries within 30 days of the date a notice is posted to: Marine Resources Commission, Fisheries Management Division, 2600 Washington Avenue, 3rd Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607.

Note: notices below this point are beyond the 30 day comment period and are provided only as a reference of new pound net licensing activity.  Comments will not be accepted on the notices below.

December 12, 2011:  The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on a proposal of Andrew J. Sturgis of Belle Haven to license and locate four pound nets in the Chesapeake Bay as follows:

The first net is to be located approximately 0.3 miles Northwest of Powells Bluff and approximately 0.6 miles North of Daymarker #7 at the entrance to Occohannock Creek.  Length of the net will be about 834 feet.  The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 33 29.0214N and Longitude 75 56 37.9503W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 33 29.2129N and Longitude 75 56 27.5953W.

The second net is to be located approximately 1.1 miles North of Powells Bluff and approximately 0.7 miles Southwest of Bull Cove. Length of the net will be about 1,147 feet.  The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 34 23.3796N and Longitude 75 56 27.0653W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 34 18.8529N and Longitude 75 56 13.9930W.

The third net is to be located near the mouth of Craddock Creek, approximately 0.5 miles North of Bull Cove and approximately 0.6 miles Southwest of Back Creek. Length of the net will be about 750 feet.  The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 35 18.0599N and Longitude 75 56 07.6041W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 35 15.9845N and Longitude 75 55 58.6470W.

The fourth net is to be located near Sandy Point, approximately 0.6 miles North of Back Creek and approximately 2 miles South of the entrance to Nandua Creek. Length of the net will be about 1,115 feet.  The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 36 07.9577N and Longitude 75 55 37.8141W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 36 06.7888N and Longitude 75 55 24.0315W.

A public hearing on this proposal will be held at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia.  Written comments on the proposal should be mailed to Jack Travelstead, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Fisheries Management Division, 2600 Washington Avenue, 3rd Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607, by 5:00 p.m., Monday, January 23, 2012.

October 12, 2011:  Notice is hereby given that Andrew J. Sturgis of Belle Haven has applied to the Marine Resources Commission to license and locate four pound nets in the Chesapeake Bay as follows:

The first net is to be located approximately 0.3 miles Northwest of Powells Bluff and approximately 0.6 miles North of Daymarker #7 at the entrance to Occohannock Creek.  Length of the net will be about 834 feet.  The offshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 33 29.0214N and Longitude 75 56 37.9503W and the inshore end of the net is to be located at Latitude 37 33 29.2129N and Longitude 75 56 27.5953W.

March 21, 2011:  Notice is hereby given that Andrew J. Sturgis of Belle Haven, Virginia has applied to the Marine Resources Commission to license and locate a pound net in Chesapeake Bay in Accomac County, approximately 0.9 miles north of the channel entering Occohannock Creek and approximately 700 feet west of the shoreline that is just north of Powells Bluff.  The offshore end of the pound net is proposed to be located at Latitude N 37 33 40.80 and Longitude W 75 56 47.04.
