Public Notice: Pertaining to the Taking of Black Drum

NOTICE

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on proposed amendments to Regulation 4 VAC 20-320-10 et seq., "Pertaining to the Taking of Black Drum" described below.

In accordance with Section 28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on the proposed regulations will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, October 28, 1997 at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News. Written comments on these proposals should be mailed to Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, P. O. Box 756, Newport News, Virginia 23607. A copy of the proposed regulations may be reviewed at the Commission, Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the proposed regulations may call the Commission at (757) 247-2248.

PROPOSED AMENDMENTS:

The purpose of the proposed amendments is to modify the special black drum management area provision to allow the setting of gill nets in a portion of the area now closed to gill netting from May 1 through June 7.

The Commission will consider the following alternatives:

1) To allow the setting of any gill net with a mesh less than 10" in the special management area from May 1 through June 7 from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The current regulation prohibits the setting of any gill net of any size in this area.

2) To move the eastern boundary of the special management area from the shoreline to a line connecting Fisherman Island with the buoys RGN"LS", N"16", and RN"18", and Plantation Light, and the Cape Charles jetty.

3) The Commission will consider other alternatives to adjust the boundaries of the management area.
