Public Notice: Pertaining to Summer Flounder 2001

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on proposed amendments to Regulation 4 VAC 20-620-10 ET SEQ., "Pertaining to Summer Flounder". The proposed amendments are shown below, according to section of the proposed final Regulation 4 VAC 20-620-10 et seq.

The purpose of the amendments is to reduce recreational fishing mortality, in order to rebuild the depleted stocks of Summer Flounder.

In accordance with §28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on the adoption of the proposed amendments will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 22, 2001, at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia. Written comments on the proposals should be mailed to: Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, P. O. Box 756, Newport News, VA 23607. A copy of the proposed regulation may be reviewed at the Commission during Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 P.M. THE AMENDMENTS: 

4 VAC 20-620-50. MINIMUM SIZE LIMITS: 

The minimum size of Summer Flounder harvested recreationally in the Potomac River Tributaries of Virginia shall correspond to the minimum size limit as established by the Potomac River Fisheries Commission for the mainstem Potomac River.

4 VAC 20-620-60. POSSESSION LIMIT: 

The possession limit for summer flounder harvested recreationally from the Potomac River Tributaries of Virginia shall correspond to the possession limit as established by the Potomac River Fisheries Commission for the mainstem Potomac River.

4 VAC 20-620-70. RECREATIONAL FISHING SEASON:

There are 4 proposed options for the 2001 recreational fishing season. The first three options pertain to all Virginia tidal waters except the Potomac River Tributaries of Virginia, and the first three options listed below propose no change to the minimum size limit (15 1/2 inches) or possession limit (8 fish) that were in effect in 2000 : 

1) The recreational fishing season shall be closed from July 24 through August 7.


2) The recreational fishing season shall be closed from July 19 through August 1.

3) The recreational fishing season shall be closed from July 24 through August 1 and from September 18 through December 31.

4) Any closed period for the recreational fishing season in the Potomac River Tributaries of Virginia shall correspond to the closed period as established by the Potomac River Fisheries Commission for the mainstem Potomac River.
