Public Notice: 2009 PROTECTIVE SHELLFISH ENCLOSURE SITING NOTICES

REGULATION 4 VAC 20-1130-10 Et Seq. and Section 28.2-603.2 of the Code of Virginia provide an opportunity for public comment on proposals to place protective shellfish enclosures on leased ground.  The following notices are posted by date; the comment period for each notice is as is specified below for each individual siting notice.   Please check with The Fisheries Division at (757) 247-2248 to verify when a specific comment period ends.


Note: notices below this point are beyond the comment period and are provided only as a reference of shellfish enclosure siting activity. Comments will not be accepted on the notices below.

This proposal was withdrawn by the applicant on January 13, 2010; originally posted December 3, 2009:  Bevans Oyster Company, Inc. of Kinsale has notified the Virginia Marine Resources Commission of its intent to temporarily place up to 250 protective aquaculture structures per acre for culturing oysters on 2.5 acres of leased ground in the South Yeocomico River, southeast of Walker Point and southwest of Palmer Point. August 17, 2009: 
Melville Enterprises, LLC, of Warsaw has notified the Virginia Marine Resources Commission of its intent to place up to 500 protective aquaculture structures for culturing oysters on a 100 acre lease, located in the Rappahannock River, approximately ¼ mile north of Bowlers Wharf. July 6, 2009:  Bevans Oyster Company, Inc. of Kinsale has notified the Virginia Marine Resources Commission of its intent to temporarily place up to 250 protective aquaculture structures per acre for culturing oysters on 3 acres of leased ground in the Yeocomico River, northwest of Mundy Point and on 5 acres of leased ground northeast of Mundy Point. April 2, 2009: Mr. Jennings C. Burton, Jr. of Mathews has notified the Marine Resources Commission of his intent to place up to 500 temporary protective enclosures for culturing oysters at each of three sites in the James River at Ballards Marsh and Days Point. February 26, 2009: Andy Drewer of Saxis has notified the Marine Resources Commission of his intent to place up to 2499 protective aquaculture enclosures for culturing oysters on 15 acres of leased ground at the mouth of Fishing Creek, a tributary of Pocomoke Sound.
