Bevans Oyster Company
Margaret Bevans

Site Description:
The growout location is in Shannon Branch (Northern) of the Yeocomico River on lease numbers 17469 and 6967. The growout locations are close to the oyster plant, which will serve as the emergency management site. The growout location on lease #17469 is generally hard sand and slopes from 0 to 2 feet mlw, with an east or southeast wind exposure. The growout location on lease 6967 is hard sand with a relatively steep slope to 4' mlw. This site is in a small creek with almost no wind exposure.

Deployment Method:
Oysters will be grown in bags held in 3' X 3' wire bottom racks. The racks are constructed with 1" X 1" coated wire on 6" legs. Each rack will hold approximately 300 oysters at final densities. Bags will be secured in the bottom racks with cable ties and 5/8" rebar placed on top of the cages. The cages will be placed in units of 6 so that a 20' length of rebar will span all of the cages in the unit. Each six-cage unit will be spaced approximately 6 feet apart. The cages will be placed in water depths of approximately 1 foot mlw, and tended at low tide. During the period when freezing may occur, the cages will be moved to depths of 2' mlw.

Emergency Management Plan:
Both growout sites are relatively protected from most damaging winds such as a northeaster or weak hurricanes. The areas are generally protected by land on all sides. If there is a hurricane warning for a Category 3 or larger hurricane, the cages will be picked up and moved to the oyster processing facility. All cages will be checked for sanding and for damage following any significant wind event.

Bevans Oyster Company employees will be trained in handling oyster aquaculture systems. Margaret Bevans will be responsible for implementing the Emergency Management Plan.

Ice movement will be avoided by moving the cages into slightly deeper water during the winter months.
