Public Notice: Pertaining to regulatory actions for the horseshoe crab fishery

NOTICE

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) invites public comment on proposed regulatory actions for the horseshoe crab fishery, as listed below.

In accordance with Section 28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, public hearings on the proposed regulations will be held at the Eastern Shore Community College, Melfa, Virginia at 7 PM on Thursday, June 25, 1998 and 12:00 noon on Tuesday, July 28, 1998 at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News. Written comments on these proposals should be mailed to Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, P. O. Box 756, Newport News, Virginia 23607. A copy of the proposed regulations may be reviewed at the Commission, Monday through Friday, 8:15 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the proposed regulations may call the Commission at (757) 247-2248.

Purpose: The purpose of the regulatory actions is to limit the exploitation of the horseshoe crab stock, while maintaining traditional fisheries and uses of horseshoe crabs in Virginia.

Summary of Proposed Management Measures: The Commission will consider various management measures for this fishery, including but not limited to following:
