Public Notice: Pertaining to proposal of the Virginia Seafood Council to introduce the non-native oyster

NOTICE

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on a proposal of the Virginia Seafood Council to introduce the non-native oyster, Crassostrea ariakcensis, to selected sites in Virginia waters.

A public hearing on the proposal, described below, will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia. Written comments on the proposal should be addressed to: Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, P. O. Box 756, Newport News, VA 23607.

PROPOSAL

The Virginia oyster industry, in an effort coordinated through the Virginia Seafood Council, requests permission to introduce the non-native oyster, Crassostrea ariakcensis, on bottom in selected sites by several qualified industry members. This commercial pilot project is intended to measure on-bottom economic performance of this non-native species.

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science will provide the chemically induced triploid oysters.

Participants, selected by a consensus method within the industry, will introduce the oysters on bottom in covered cages. Crassostrea ariakensis is an on-bottom species from the turbid waters of China, where conditions are comparable to the Chesapeake Bay. The triploid oysters will be placed in areas of high, medium, and low salinity.
