OF COMMISSIONER STEVEN G. BOWMAN VIRGINIA MARINE RESOURCES COMMISSION Commissioner Bowman is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys fishing, boating and hunting. He was appointed to his post by Governor Timothy M. Kaine in 2006. Commissioner Bowman has spent most of his career in law enforcement, having served with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office, the Smithfield Police Department, and the Virginia State Police. He was the Chief Deputy Sheriff for the Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office just before he joined the Virginia Marine Resources Commission in 1992 as Deputy Chief of Law Enforcement. He was promoted to Chief of Law Enforcement in 1996, and promoted again in 2004 to Deputy Commissioner. He grew up in the James River community of Claremont in Surry County, Va. Due to changes in his father’s work location, he graduated from Louisville (Kentucky) Central High School in 1978. After high school, he attended the University of Kentucky. In 1985, he graduated from the Virginia State Police Academy. He was a dean’s list graduate of the University of Louisville (Kentucky), Southern Police Institute, Administrative Officer’s Class in 1995. In 2000, he attended the Virginia Executive Institute. After a 20 year hiatus, Commissioner Bowman returned to higher education and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Governmental Administration from Christopher Newport University. He received Departmental Honors for Exceptional Academic Achievement, and was elected to "Who’s Who" among students in American universities and colleges. Commissioner Bowman resides in Smithfield with his wife, Amy. He has two sons, Steven and Connor. |
