Site Description:
The growout location is on the south shore of the York River on lease number 17423. The growout location is adjacent to a large Coast Guard pier on a sandy flat approximately 2 feet deep at mlw. This site is exposed to winds from the northwest to northeast. The emergency management site is in Sarah's Creek, directly across the York River from the growout location.
Deployment Method:
Oysters will be grown in bags held in 3' X 3' and 3' X 4' wire bottom racks. The racks are constructed with 1" by 1" coated wire and sit on 6" legs. Each rack will hold approximately 300 to 400 oysters at final densities. Bags will be secured in the racks with cable ties and held down with rebar. The cages will be placed in units of 6 so that a 20' length of rebar will span the entire unit. Each unit will be approximately 6' apart. Cages will be placed in water depths of 1 to 2 feet at mlw and tended at low tides. During the period that freezing may occur, all cages will be moved to depths of at least 2 feet mlw.
Emergency Management Plan:
This growout site is subject to significant wind exposure from the north. All growout bags will be moved to the emergency management site for all hurricane warnings. All growout bags will be moved for northeasters with forecasts of 50 mph winds or greater. The cages will be checked following significant wind events of any size.
Tommy Leggett and Linda Crewe have extensive experience with oyster aquaculture at this site. Both previous Virginia Seafood Council trials have used these sites and this method with no significant problems. Linda Crewe and Tommy Leggett will be responsible for implementing the Emergency Management Plan.
Ice damage should be avoided by moving into deeper water during the winter.
