Site Description:
The growout location is on lease 9152 in Bogues Bay near Chincoteague. The growout site is partly in a drain that keeps 2 feet of water at mlw and partly on intertidal flats. It is well inland, behind Wallop Island, and is protected from wind exposure from all directions. The emergency management site is on Chincoteague Island.
Deployment Method:
Oysters will be grown in 2' X 8' Taylor floats and in 3' X 4' bottom racks on 6" legs. Taylor floats and bottom racks are constructed from 1" by 1" wire. Bags will be secured in the bottom racks by cable ties and rebar. Taylor floats will be tied end to end, approximately 3 feet apart with approximately 1,000 oysters per float at final densities. Approximately 400 oysters will be held in each rack and racks will be side by side in 6 unit groups so that 20' lengths of rebar cover each unit.
Emergency Management Plan:
This site is protected from most wind events. Heavy poles anchor the Taylor floats at regular intervals. For hurricane warnings of Category 3 or greater, the oyster bags will be brought to Chincoteague Island.
Ice will not impact the Taylor floats. The bottom racks will be placed in deeper water during the time of year when freezing could occur.
Tommy Mason has years of oyster and clam aquaculture experience. He will be responsible for implementing the Emergency Management Plan.
